Martin Luther
Martin Luther was born on November the 10th in Germany, 1483. Martin Luther was an influential figure in Christian History. In 1505 Luther had a life changing experience. He was caught in a horrific thunderstorm where he called out to St. Anne “Save me and I’ll become a monk”! The storm quieted down and he was safe. Luther then becomes a Monk even though it disappointed his father, as he was a Scientist.
Through Martin’s Studies he started to become really spiritual and faithful towards God, so much so that in 1517 when Pope Leo X announced new Indulgences to fund the build of St. Peters Basilica, Martin became angry and frustrated In the Catholic Church. So on the 31st of October 1517 Martin Luther stapled a sheet of paper with 95 theses that he wrote, on the universities Chapel Door, as well as sending a copy to the Pope.
Because of the printing press, which was relatively new in the time, Martin’s Theses’ spread all throughout Germany, influencing lots of people. In Summary, Martin believed in the idea that salvation could be reached through faith and by grace ONLY. Meaning he enthusiastically objected to the selling of Indulgences (buying your way through Purgatory). For Martin the heart of the Gospel was a belief that salvation was a gift from God and that It could not be achieve by anything a person could do. He believed that God's mercy was a free gift given to those who abide by God and those who are faithful.
