The Black Plague
The Black Death was a form of the bubonic plague that all throughout Asia and Europe in the 14th Century killing roughly a quarter of their Population combined. The plague spread through Flees and ground Rats effecting and killing around 200 million people. This was a significant time in History because before this everyone STRONGLY believed in God, however after the plague some people’s faith was weakened. Some though that this was Gods way of punishing man, like Noah’s Ark.
Priests were expected to go help and heal the sick however, most of them wouldn't set foot in the houses of the sick. Some could argue that this plague showed the human side (the non powerful side) of the church, leaving people scared and worried. Nonetheless there were a few priests and nuns who died trying to heal the sick. Also because several of the priests were dying, they were starting to run out of fully qualified people for the job. So through the abuse of Indulgences they were paying any nice guy to become a priest and heal the sick, which obviously didn't work. This new ‘unhelpful church’ that people weren't used to, influenced Martin Luther’s Reformation.
To try and get rid of the disease some people would:
· Always carry flowers with a sweet smell to keep the disease away
· Some CRAZY Catholics would walk the streets whipping each other begging God for mercy.
· Some people would move into the sewers as they thought the disease was airborne.
· Priests would constantly sit near fires as they though they were pure enough to keep the disease away. Funny enough this worked because the Fleas and Rats hated the extreme heats. However this treatment was only for Priests because people in that time couldn't afford a fire.
